A highway in the Mt Everest!
Irani | Jun 20 2007

Another four months and you would have a highway leading you all the way to Mount Everest. Though it won’t take you right to the top of world’s highest mountain, first scaled by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary back in 1953, but you can reach 5,200 metre high and literally feel at the top of the world.

Chinese Xinhua news agency reported that China is shelling out $19.7 million to build the highway on the side of Mt Everest to facilitate torch relay of next year’s Beijing Olympic Games to the top of world’s tallest mountain.

The 108 KM long road would lead you straight from the foot of the mountain to a height of 5,200 metre high and from there, the torch would continue its journey to the peak. The road, construction of which would start next week, would also boost tourism and mountaineering once the torch relay is over, predicted Xinhua.

The Beijing Olympic torch would travel a staggering 136,790 KMs over 130 days covering five continents.

People, however, doubt that China’s plan to take the torch to Mt Everest is a political effort to underline its claim to Tibet.
