‘Baltimore Running Festival’ collects tons of trash for good

How about running in an event that encourages green practices? This is what was exactly seen in the Baltimore Marathon 2009. The Baltimore Running Festival that flagged-off from Russell and Camden Streets saw some 20,000 people participate in the festival. The event proved to be a great success for the organizers, participants and Mother Nature. Humongous amounts of compostable and recycled items were collected at the end of the event. Even the stuff provided by the sponsors of the event had some element of green.

The Baltimore Running Festival concluded with a collection of some 3.7 tons of single stream recycled items such as bottles, along with 1.1 tons of compostable items such as cups and banana peels. Aquafina, the event sponsors offered special bottles made from 50 percent less plastic. Another sponsor, Under Armour gave some 20,000 participants race shirts that were made from 100 percent-recycled materials. This eco-friendly effort by the festival certainly deserves appreciation.
