After creating the famous Barrel Monster, Joe Carnevale is back with yet another masterpiece, a giant elephant. His newest creation is made using secondhand computer monitors, washed-up motherboards and picked-apart keyboards. Carnevale, the eco-conscious artist who was interviewed on National Public Radio for his green initiatives was spotted by the North Raleigh nonprofit agency Purple Elephant. The company signed up the environmentalist to help it gain some exposure so that it could make some cash for its project under which needy children in boys and girls clubs are given repaired computers for free.
It took Carnevale several weeks to strive through the pile of hardware provided by Purple Elephant and finally come up with the innovative creation. An open CD drive became the face of the oversized animal, while bent motherboards gave the elephant its back. Its tail is made from power cords, wrapped into a braid and the legs are sculpted from discarded computer shells, stacked on a pallet and sturdy enough to shake. The elephant’s trunk is fashioned from old speakers, each the size of a softball, molded into a giant curlicue and sitting right behind the cybernetic pachyderm is a snow shovel made from old cooling fans.
