Adhering to the Massachusetts’s Clean Energy Biofuels Act completely, the Boston University begins recycling the waste cooking oil to heat thirteen of university’s buildings. Each year, the BU produces 5,000 gallons of cooking oil waste. This fall, it hopes to utilize some of it coming from on-campus mess halls and the percentage will increase gradually.
There are score of reasons for this. First, the MCEBA requires a minimum percentage of biofuel as component of all diesel fuel and home heating fuel sold in the Commonwealth. Second, the reused cooking oil produces 70% less greenhouse emissions and is cheaper when compared to petroleum heating oil, says National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Finally, the company Save That Stuff’s massive reclamation of 100 tons of trash a month from the university inspired the faculty to start making use of cooking oil that goes to sewers generally.
