Camenzind Evolution has designed an exquisite and extraordinary structure on a beautiful hillside in Zurich’s Seefeld district. Dubbed as the “Cocoon”, the elliptical building enjoys a unique relationship with nature. Surrounded with age-old trees on three sides, the eco-friendly structure has stepped, upward-winding sequence of segments giving character to the interior of the building. All spaces are arranged along a gently rising ramp, which wraps around a central, light-flooded atrium.
Setting perfect lake and mountain views, the Cocoon incorporating a versatile circulation system has an amazing blend of lift, spiral ramp, segments and stairwell. This unusual structure uses environmentally- friendly techniques for heating and cooling purpose. It integrates an air-source heat pump system for temperature maintenance. The centerpiece of the structure is a light-flooded, upwardly widening atrium, around which the circulation and communication ramp winds its way upwards in gently curving contours, to provide a fluid link between all the internal spaces.
The Cocoon is constructed by surrounding scaly blanket of stainless steel wire mesh. Standing on 1,900sqm of land, the total construction cost of this stunning structure was some $8,800,000.
