The Virginia Commonwealth University student environmental organization, Green Unity 4 VCU, tried contributing toward our environment in their own little way. Last week the organization conducted e-cycling, an event where students recycled obsolete electronics and batteries in order to keep them away from landfills and groundwater. Thinking of the ill effects of the toxic chemicals in the electronics on the environment provoked Green Unity to join hands with VCU to save the planet.
Considering the fact that recycling electronics involves spending money, Green Unity thought of offering VCU students a free outlet for e-cycling. The event brought with itself a great opportunity to educate people about recycling. The event that was held in the Student Commons on Wednesday saw dozens of students coming to drop off items from old power cords and broken microwaves to worn-out batteries.
In order to collect items for e-cycling, Green Unity collaborated with an organization called First and Second Solutions, which also broke down the devices and determines which parts can be used to make other things. For the event the number of recycling bins on campus has also increased. The VCU Theater Department has already succeeded in recycling old batteries worth thousands of dollars.
