Not until Divya Murthy and Nicola Parente attended the Systems of Sustainability: Art, Innovation, Action (SOS) conference held at University of Houston, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts last spring, did they realize that their idea of recycling could really work well. An integral part of Art League of Houston, the duo puts new life into living sculptures. Working for their exhibition ‘Natural Recyclers and Wasted Resolve’, the eco art team created extraordinary pieces of art natural things and trash.
Well for Natural Recyclers, the duo’s outdoor installation a set of giant mushroom sculptures are being completed that will soon be covered with native, non-native and edible plants, while a moss milkshake will coat the stems. The installation is said to be up for eight months or may be even longer. As for the Wasted Resolve, the gallery part of the show trash will be brought into play. The team has collected waste from an eight-block radius around the Art League, which was transformed into a graph on the gallery’s walls. Murthy and Parente hope to impress visitors and encourage them to take up recycling practices, doing some good to Houstan’s poor recycling reputation.
