This year’s monsoon is creating havoc across the world, resulting from flash floods and mudslides. Following monsoon rains in India’s northeast, nearly 300 people got trapped on a train after the track was buried by mudslides. Authorities rescued them after two days of their staying buried.
As part of the rescue operations, the soldiers reached the train stranded in a dense jungle south of Guwahati, the capital of Assam state on Tuesday. They escorted the passengers through the vegetation to the town of Haflong — about 175 miles from Guwahati, informed a railway spokesman.
Till now, this year’s monsoon has killed 123 people in India. This season, the heavy rains arrived way up the subcontinent, a week before they were expected. It all started to shower from May 25. The monsoon season here ends in October.
In the northeast, floods and mudslides have killed at least nine people, leaving some 6,500 people homeless. Connected to the rest of India only by a small sliver of land, this region is wedged between China, Myanmar and Bangladesh and.
