Elusive genetic variations that make people vulnerable to some of the most common diseases need to be uncovered, and on this line Government scientists are launching a major project. The project would also determine what in the environment — pollution, behavior or diet — pushes those people into full-blown illness!
And to help do the work, the National Institutes of Health is trying to raise $60 million from drug companies. An industry-government partnership is crucial to speed research, the National Institutes of Health says. Pfizer Inc. is the first to donate is the world’s largest drug maker. And it is followed by a leading producer of gene-detection equipment, Affymetrix Inc. Hope the gene discoveries would be available to all scientists, and won’t become the property of the companies who invest!
