Scared planet : Is it working for the environment?
Shaweta Chauhan | May 18 2009

As we all know, David Attenborough involved himself in a lot of controversial and daring ventures during his long career. He loves humans as much as other, but only until the global population is under control. He is patronizing the Optimum Population Trust - a research organization on population growth and environment with a scary website showing the population clock ticking.
Keeping in mind that scientists are still divided on the fact whether humans are really the ultimate culprits for the growing problems of our planet or not, the clock seems to hold no relevance, as far as impact on environment is concerned, for now. The Sun, the Milky Way and even Evolution as a whole too are in the line.

Scaring the humans

Each day there are fresh reports stating various scary facts. 12th September, 2008 was predicted as the last day of our planet by some scientists. However, nothing as such happened. There have been similar predictions in the past, which have failed, and similar predictions have been made about the future, whose occurrence is also not confirmed.
40% of Amazon forests have been predicted to be vanished by 2050. There are certain rivers as well as certain species of animals and birds, whose extinction has also been forecast.

These are just predictions based on certain assumptions, which might or might not occur. However, one thing that is sure to happen is that they induce fear in the minds of common people.
Apparently, the divide between the believers and the non-believers is more scarier.

Scared humans

The occurrence of these events is not sure. However, they have a negative impact on the psyche of the common people. People get scared. Imagine yourself looking at a watch, which shows you the amount of time you have left to live. I am sure anybody would get scared. Such predictions induce this kind of fear in the minds of common people.
I would like to question the scientists that wouldn’t it be better to try to take common people along with them instead of scaring them?

Environment: Crushed in between?
What do you do when you have a severe stomach ache? You go to a doctor and ask him to give you a pain-killer and also find the root cause for the pain. This means that in personal care we want both, the cause for the problem and the solution. However, what the scientists today are doing is that they are only finding the cause of the problem and neglecting the solution. And who is the sufferer in this entire process? It is our own planet Earth.
Research is good. However, we need to project it as a positive force by bringing together people and encourage them to really contribute. Technology is emerging as a way out of the quagmire, but it is not projected the way it should be.
Do you see yourself just a consumer of green statistics or someone who is prompted to take action by it? Are you scared?
