Golf, a game symbolic with status and class is proving to sour things up for the environment. According to a research conducted by the Danish Golf Association, golf balls are becoming a major litter problem as it takes nearly 100 to 1,000 years for each of them to decompose naturally. An estimated 300 million balls are lost in the US alone, every year causing environmental hazards.
The research helped the scientist discover the high quantity release of heavy metals during decomposition, including dangerous levels of zinc found in solid core golf balls. During the study when the zinc was immersed in water, it attached itself to the ground sediment and poisoned the surrounding flora and fauna. Danish Golf Union is planning to team up with environmentalists in America in order to conduct more tests to completely analyze the extent of the problem.
