Having won an international design competition a full three years back, the Grant Associates, award winning architects Wilkinson Eyre and structural engineers Atelier 10 now reveal the master-plan for the Singapore’s largest garden project alongside the Marina Bay. Dubbed as the Marina South Gardens, the 54-hectare botanical gardens are a part of the National Parks Board’s Gardens by the Bay Project. The orchid-shaped garden will flaunt solar supertrees that are fully fledged 25 to 50 meters high vertical gardens.
The solar supertrees decked along the garden will act as the solar hot water heaters, solar panels, venting ducts and rainwater harvesting systems at one fell swoop. Moreover, the botanical garden will develop into a greenhouse with a boardwalk. It will provide the alien species of plants with a conducive environment. A perfect venue for green events and exhibitions, the gardens will allow the core themes of “Plants and Planet” and “Plants and People” to mingle within its peripheries. I hope that by 2011, the botanical gardens could see the clear light of the day.
