Solar electric fence keeps elephants under wedged surveillance in Kenya
Desh | Nov 9 2009

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) seems to have found a solution to the mischievous exploits of elephants in Shimba Hills National Park. The contraption is a 50-megawatt solar powered fence installed within the park that produces strong electric current, and thus discourages any wildlife infiltration through it. Accordingly, it has brought down such incidents to a considerable degree.

It’s natural for elephants to raid into farms bordering the National Park. So in the process, they used to damage crops. However, the effortless installation has brought down such incursions and farmers are now feeling safer than ever before. It is effortless, since it doesn’t require manual rigorous efforts to regulate those fences. A slight tap on a big electric switch is just enough to send a high voltage current through the electric fence.

The Arid Lands Resource Management Project (ALRMP) has employed Philip Ndivo and his family to regulate the device and to ensure that it’s powered enough to work round the clock.
