Diverting trash from landfills by transforming it into something more meaningful is what in my opinion shows signs of what a true environmentalist is. Steve Gerberich is pleased to re-defined gadgetry and turned it into a profession. The Iowa native turned New York artist has converted tinkering with antiques into a show of massive metal and art in motion. The artist who has tried his hands on various industries from farming to construction finally has satisfaction in making metal come alive.

Gerberich is all set for the premier of his ingenious creation called the “Springs, Sprockets and Pulleys” at the Muscatine Art Center on Saturday. Members will get an opportunity to meet the artist and preview the show. His six-piece orchestra, wooden arms and metal hands move in unity with five different quirky jazz pieces just at the press of a button. His installation has some with expressions and everything from eyebrows to earlobes, while some are animals, like the flying metal birds. Gerberich’s largest national tour will be featured at the Art Center through December.
