Konarka Technologies, Inc., a company that develops and commercializes Konarka Power Plastic, a material that converts light to energy, today announced that it has collaborated with Arch Aluminum & Glass Co. to launch the first curtain wall pilot project. Under this project, two walls of solar panels will be erected at Arch’s office building in Tamarac, Florida. The solar panels, generating 1.5 kilowatts of power to the facility, are expected to be fully functional by year’s end.
The array of solar panels, glass and aluminum used in the pilot installation that will be used as a living laboratory with full modularity including the ability to simultaneously test a wide range of panels under various conditions, would become the curtain walls. The walls of solar panels will be constructed to gather data for architects and other customers interested in integrating solar cells into building materials.
