UNSW researchers achieve 43% solar conversion efficiency

Thus far, it was considered impossible to go beyond 40% solar conversion efficiency by employing any technology. But now, the reckoning lies wrecked and tumbled since University of New South Wales, collaborating with two US groups, sets a new record in achieving 43% efficiency.

The team, led by Martin Green, Research Director of the UNSW ARC Photovoltaics Centre of Excellence, made a silicon cell to utilize sunlight close to the infrared zone of the light spectrum. Here, they recorded a notable efficiency rate of 46%, which lowered later when combined with four other cells for different wavelengths.

Last year, the UNSW achieved 25% efficiency for an individual solar cell and therefore, attaining 43% this time by making use of five cells is impressive indeed.
