The Graduation Ceremony at the University of Oregon will come about with a difference this year. The students graduating this spring will be seen taking away their degrees in caps and gowns that are green not only in color but in characteristic as well. The eco-friendly caps and gowns are a part of “The Elements Collection” and are being provided by Jostens. They are said to be biodegradable, reducing the harmful effects on the environment.
Amber Garrison, the University of Oregon Director of Commencement, says this. This is just another way that we can be a leader within the country around all our sustainable practices. A lot of graduates when they get their bachelor’s degree wind up with a robe that they don’t know what to do with. So this is a nice way to have them participate and have something nice to wear in the ceremony but then also have something that won’t harm our environment.
The caps and gowns are made of natural fiber from renewable, managed forests. All one has to do to decompose them is bury them in the ground. The only two things that will biodegrade are metal buttons on the caps and the zippers that are made from recycled pop bottles. But, the manufactures claims that they too can be recycled. In order to make it greener, the clothing comes in recyclable packaging. If students wish to preserve them, keeping them in closets would be the perfect choice. Students receiving their bachelors and masters degrees will dress up in this attire, while the ones receiving their doctoral degrees will wear a similar version with green velvet stripes and a seal on the chest.

The zipper is made of recycled pop bottles. The button on the cap is made of metal. These are the only two parts of the outfit that are not biodegradable but they can be recycled.
