A Purdue University professor, Cary Mitchell, hopes to utilize evaporated water from the university’s power plant to grow crops in a high tunnel structure. Recently, Wal-Mart has awarded Mitchell with a $75,000 grant to help him with the project. Anyhow, the professor still needs some investors to let his researches benefit the local communities to produce crops in a cost-effective way.
Basing it on a greenhouse, the tunnels will trap heat and moisture and will pipe the water from Purdue’s coal-fired boilers for heating. It will make the ground more suitable for better production during winter. Highly advanced heat-pump technology will allow him to increase air temperatures in the tunnels and heat engines to convert substandard heat to electricity.
