If the recent flooding around the globe has made you doubt the validity of the charges against the BMC scapegoat, then you’re not alone.
Ed Mazria, founder of Architecture 2030, presented findings in a report about the rise in sea levels over the years. Referring to the threat of rising sea levels to America, which has is surrounded by over 12,000 miles of coastline, Mazria said
Sea level rise is the greatest threat to the stability of our country. The daunting images in our study make clear that we, as a nation, will be physically under siege, vulnerable to catastrophic property and infrastructure loss with large population disruptions and economic hardship.
According to the report which is available online, at approximately 450 parts per million (ppm) CO2 in the atmosphere, we will trigger potentially irreversible glacial melt and sea level rise. The study’s findings show cause for worry because we are currently at 383 ppm, and are increasing atmospheric concentrations of CO2 at about 2 ppm annually. At this growth rate, we will reach 450 ppm by 2035, or sooner!
However, along with its dooms day warning the study has also provided solutions before it’s too late. For one, the study calls for reducing the usage of coal as fuel and calls for the implementing of the 2030 Challenge, a strategy to dramatically reduce the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of the Building Sector.
One problem with the study seems to be its focus specifically on America. While global warming and rising sea levels affect everyone on the planet, the report’s myopic vision excludes the rest of the world. It’s important that the countries all over the globe unite to tackle the problem of carbon emission. Environmental catastrophes do not wait for political solutions, these are important problems - and the whole world has to take responsibility for solving it.
