Young students transform trash to treasure at Corriher-Lipe

Creativity and ingenuity of young students was on display at a recycled art show of a middle school system. Dubbed as ‘Trash to Treasure’, the recycled art show held at Corriher-Lipe last week, displayed work of about 300 middle school students in the Rowan-Salisbury School System. This show held at the school’s media center and a hallway leading to it was organized to encourage green practices among children.

The various artwork created by students included a basket and cover made by wrapping coils of newspaper with purple yarn, a display of CDs decorated with plastic cutouts, a variety of sculptures out of folded paperbacks, stacking some on top of each other. Other artistic creation that light up the exhibition were a frog mosaic created from pieces of green soft drink cans, flags made from recycled items, a shadow box assemblage made from recycled stuff like bobby pins, a key, crews, bottle caps, etc.

A student came up with a pioneer aircraft, titled ‘Maverick Air: First in Flight’, which he made using painted popsicle sticks. A seventh- grader from North, used cardboard to make a wagon covered with blue gingham cloth. Her entry was titled, “How the West Was Won.” An eighth- grader at North, used magazine photos of his favorite wrestler, John Cena, to decorate a recycled can for his entry titled, “You Light Up My Life.” This unique show helped students turn rubbish into something more meaningful and valuable.
